THE ARTISTS
Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada who are eighteen years of age and older as of January 1, 2020, are invited to submit their two-dimensional and three-dimensional work for consideration.
SSNAP was established in 2015 to recognize, showcase, and publicize the accomplishments of Canadian visual artists and to advance public appreciation of visual arts. Through this initiative, we encourage Canadian artists whose work demonstrates originality, quality, integrity and creativity to submit significant pieces with a real visual impact and depth of meaning.
Finalists will enjoy the prestige of becoming a finalist in one of Canada’s largest national art prizes. Finalists’ artwork will be exhibited online and at a month-long live exhibition to be held September 24 – October 25, 2021. Respecting Covid protocols in place at this time, finalists will be encouraged to participate in artist talks and associated events such as the opening and closing galas.
Artists will be featured in our catalogue, in national and regional press, and by highlighting subsequent accomplishments through our growing social media channels.
We are also pleased to announce that artists from the Southern Gulf Islands who have submitted to SSNAP are automatically eligible to be selected by a three-person jury for the Parallel Art Show (PAS) running concurrently with the SSNAP Exhibition at the ArtSpring Gallery from September 22 to October 17, 2021.
With the support of the Salt Spring Arts Council, the popular Parallel Art Show was developed and created by Salt Spring artists and our arts community to showcase the amazing talent of the Southern Gulf Islands’ artists during the SSNAP Finalist event.
Exhibition finalists will receive up to $200 towards shipping expenses.
THE JURY
SSNAP will showcase approximately 50 finalists chosen by a national jury.
The identity of the artists will be anonymous to the jury during the finalist selection process.
This year’s national jurors are:
• Judy Anderson; University of Calgary Canadian Indigenous studio art associate professor
• David Diviney; Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in K’jipuktuk/Halifax senior curator
• Ydessa Hendeles; Director of Ydessa Hendeles Art Foundation, artist/curator
• Michelle Jacques; Remai Modern Chief Curator, former Chief Curator at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria
As one of Canada’s largest and most diverse national art prizes, we encourage artists across Canada to take part in this wonderful opportunity for Canadian Art!
